Vanessa Hobbs, Founder and CEO

Serious about Science was started by Vanessa Hobbs, a professor who teaches at Johns Hopkins University, as well as Montgomery College and FCC.

She received her Master’s degree in Biology from Vanderbilt University and her Master’s degree in Chemistry from Middle Tennessee State University.  She has experience teaching middle school through graduate level science courses.  She’s also a homeschool mom who knows how hard it can be to find quality courses for kids to learn remotely or in local groups — courses created by people in that field of study and with their expertise. That’s why she started Serious About Science! Plus, she just loves STEM and wanted to share how fun science can really be!

Testimonials

  • "My middle schooler took the Biotech bootcamp and got to learn about fundamental techniques in biotechnology! He was excited to make bacteria glow and extract the glowing protein from them! This provided him with a glimpse of biomanufacturing! As a molecular and cell biologist myself, it is very important to me that my kids grow up to be bio-literate! It's fantastic that kids can now explore the exciting world of biotech through this course."

  • "My 16 & 17 year olds attended the 1 day lab last summer and truly enjoyed it. They came home excited and wanting to learn more. In fact they asked to take more labs so I enrolled them in the high school week long learning lab as well last summer. Vanessa is a wonderful teacher who knows her science as well as how to teach it and motivate students to learn. Both teens asked if she would be holding labs again this year & if she would tutor them in college next year. You can’t find a better program or genuinely kind, passionate person than Vanessa ."
