FAQs

Do you offer financial aid?

Here at Serious About Science, we understand that biotech and STEM courses may be out of reach for some budgets. We have partnered with Living Well Youth Works to provide even more affordable classes and increase accessibility of science education. We also offer scholarships. Please fill out and submit this financial aid form here, and we will let you know if we have the space and available funding to accommodate your requests. Everyone deserves science education and we work together with the local community to provide fun and innovative science courses.

I’m not local, how can I take your courses?

Serious About Science offers both in-person local courses and distance learning courses, which can be shipped anywhere in the United States.

All of our options are open and available to students of any academic background, whether they attend public school, private school, or receive home education.

In-person/local courses are held at the Frederick Innovative Technology Center in Frederick, MD.

Distance learning courses are fully remote with lab and lecture instruction occurring on the Canvas Learning Management System. All lab supplies will be shipped to your home so that students can benefit from science instruction in their own homes and home classrooms. This includes all assessments (online tests and assessments), graded work (lab work and case studies) and lectures (lecture and lab instruction).  It is an open and go, hands-on curriculum run by an experienced biology and chemistry professor.  Grade reports and documentation will be provided.

When will the courses be run?

In-person/local courses are typically short, hands-on sessions that cater to middle and high school students in and around Frederick, Maryland.  These are scheduled throughout the year with week long summer camps. Learn more here!

Our distance learning courses run September – May and contain weekly modules with work being submitted and completed each week. Get more info about our distance learning biotech and science courses here.

I am not a science person; will this course still work for my family?

Our coursework is designed to allow Serious About Science to provide fascinating courses that can be implemented in your home with minimal space. Whether you or your student consider yourselves science people, our curriculum makes the material accessible and easy to follow.  This material can be used with all students, regardless of their level of science education.  Serious About Science meets all students where they are.  Our classes can be catered to all students, whether below grade level or advanced honors.  We work to accommodate a variety of students’ needs and different abilities.

My child goes to public school; can they still take this course?

Our courses are available to public school students, private school students and homeschoolers.  Everyone is welcome!   Our courses can count as a year’s worth of lab science course for a middle or high schooler or supplemental to your existing class schedule.

Testimonials

  • "My middle schooler took the Biotech bootcamp and got to learn about fundamental techniques in biotechnology! He was excited to make bacteria glow and extract the glowing protein from them! This provided him with a glimpse of biomanufacturing! As a molecular and cell biologist myself, it is very important to me that my kids grow up to be bio-literate! It's fantastic that kids can now explore the exciting world of biotech through this course."

  • "My 16 & 17 year olds attended the 1 day lab last summer and truly enjoyed it. They came home excited and wanting to learn more. In fact they asked to take more labs so I enrolled them in the high school week long learning lab as well last summer. Vanessa is a wonderful teacher who knows her science as well as how to teach it and motivate students to learn. Both teens asked if she would be holding labs again this year & if she would tutor them in college next year. You can’t find a better program or genuinely kind, passionate person than Vanessa ."
