How are our classes unique?

Whether you’re looking for in-person classes or distance learning, Serious About Science has courses for your child.

Building the Case covers a variety of techniques, including fiber analysis, blood spatter, toxicology, and solving a crime of “Who killed the mayor?” at the end.  The biotech camp will cover concepts such as polymerase chain reactions, analyzing DNA using gel electrophoresis, analyzing their own genes for morningness or eveningness, analyzing fish samples to confirm the species, and making glowing bacteria.

Our in-person courses are local to in and around Frederick, MD, and are short and packed with fun, educational content.

Our remote forensic course is a year-long class administered through Canvas. Lectures and labs bring the realism of the classroom to your home. Plus, we’ll mail all the necessary supplies and chemicals to you — everything is included in the price of the course. Topics will include toxicology, fingerprints, blood spatter, trace evidence, ballistics, and more!  It will also have two crimes to solve at the end of the year using techniques they’ve learned over the years.

Whether your child is homeschooled, attends private school, or goes to public school, Serious About Science brings a new level of fun, hands-on science learning to you!

Testimonials

  • "My middle schooler took the Biotech bootcamp and got to learn about fundamental techniques in biotechnology! He was excited to make bacteria glow and extract the glowing protein from them! This provided him with a glimpse of biomanufacturing! As a molecular and cell biologist myself, it is very important to me that my kids grow up to be bio-literate! It's fantastic that kids can now explore the exciting world of biotech through this course."

  • "My 16 & 17 year olds attended the 1 day lab last summer and truly enjoyed it. They came home excited and wanting to learn more. In fact they asked to take more labs so I enrolled them in the high school week long learning lab as well last summer. Vanessa is a wonderful teacher who knows her science as well as how to teach it and motivate students to learn. Both teens asked if she would be holding labs again this year & if she would tutor them in college next year. You can’t find a better program or genuinely kind, passionate person than Vanessa."
